Appliance Safety

To lessen the risk of damage, turn off or disconnect any appliances that would go on automatically when power is restored, like refrigerators, freezers and water pumps. Be especially sure that heat-producing electric stoves, toaster ovens, irons or hair curlers are off or disconnected – fires could result if these items are on and operating when the power comes back on.

Also unplug sensitive equipment such as fax machines, microwaves, computers
and televisions. Surge protectors prevent damage to your appliances and office equipment.
