  • Gas Safety Notice: Serious flooding conditions, like those experienced throughout our service territory because of Tropical Storm Irene, have the potential to undermine the stability of underground pipelines. If you see damage in the vicinity of pipelines and/or smell the odor of natural gas, report it immediately to our Gas Odor Hotline: 1-800-942-8274. Remember: This number is ONLY to be used to report gas odors.

Central Hudson History
February 2010 240,000 customers lost power as a result of back-to-back winter snowstorms.
August 28, 2011 180,000 customers lose power as a result of Tropical Storm Irene
April 1997 100,000 customers lost power as a result of “Snowbud,” an early spring snowstorm
October 1987 80,000 customers lost service as a result, of “Snowleaf”, an early fall snowstorm.
September 1999 80,000 customers were impacted by rain and winds from Hurricane Floyd.
December 2008 75,000 customers lost power when an ice storm coated the region.
May 2000 52,000 customers lost power during a summer storm
July 2002 36,000 customers lost power during a summer storm.

Hurricane Categories

Category 1
Winds:
74-95 mph
Surge: 4-5 ft
Impact: Downed trees and increased power outages. Damage to unanchored mobile homes, shrubbery, and trees. Some coastal flooding. Minimal damage to building structures.

Category 2
Winds:
96-110 mph
Surge: 6-8 ft
Impact: Considerable damage to trees and mobile homes. Significant power outages. Some roofing material, door, and window damage.

Category 3
Winds:
111-130 mph
Surge: 9-12 ft
Impact: Some structural damage to small residences and buildings. Mobile homes are destroyed. Terrain may be flooded well inland. Severe damage to vegetation and power lines.

Category 4
Winds:
131-155 mph
Surge: 13-18 ft
Impact: Extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failure on small residences. Major erosion. Terrain may be flooded well inland. Severe damage to vegetation and power lines.

Category 5
Winds:
155+ mph
Surge: 18 ft +
Impact: Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small buildings blown over or away. Flooding causes major damage to lower floors of all structures near the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required. Severe damage to vegetation and power lines.

Note: A tropical depression is defined as having sustained windspeeds of less than 39 miles per hour (cause localized tree damage and power interruptions), and a tropical storm 39 - 73 mph (with tree damage and power interruptions, property damage and some flooding)

American Red Cross of Northeastern New York (ARCNENY) volunteers will be on site at several of the locations to provide water, food, temporary shelter and assist with any other needs.  Those seeking refuge in shelters are encouraged to bring essential items that will make their stay safe and comfortable, such as any medications needed, light bedding material, baby food, diapers and other baby supplies for infants, etc. The American Red Cross shelters cannot accommodate any pets, residents needing assistance with pets should contact the local SPCA for assistance.
