Central Hudson Employees Volunteer to Rebuild Home for Beacon Resident

Central Hudson employees teamed up with friends and relatives and volunteered to rebuild the home of a recently widowed Beacon resident on April 28, 2012. It was part of National Rebuilding Day through Rebuilding Together Dutchess County.

A team of Central Hudson employees joined hundreds of other volunteers on a late-April Saturday to help rehabilitate homes of Hudson Valley residents in need.

The charitable effort took place on National Rebuilding Day – an annual event that helps improve the lives of low-income elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners across the country.

This year, the Central Hudson crew made repairs to an elderly woman’s home in Beacon. The group patched and painted parts of her house damaged by a leaky roof; made plumbing and electrical repairs; fixed broken tiles; repaired stair railings; caulked windows and bathtubs; tested smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; and replaced several doors – at no cost to the homeowner.

“Performing this kind of volunteer work is extremely rewarding to me and all the other employee-volunteers on the team,” said Central Hudson’s director of project management, Chris Rottkamp, who led the volunteers’ effort on April 28. “You see instant results as well as the joy and emotions of a homeowner who would not have otherwise been able to make the repairs.”

The volunteers’ contributions helped the homeowner return to a comfortable and safe environment.

“It never ceases to amaze me how much work our volunteers can do,” said Christina Boryk, executive director of Rebuilding Together Dutchess County. “This is our 20th year and I am always impressed with the help Central Hudson employees offer to improve a neighbor’s life.”

Central Hudson was the first sponsor of a Rebuilding Together house in 1992. Since then, hundreds of our employees have contributed thousands of volunteer hours to repair homes in the region.
