Central Hudson Customers Advised of Potentially Higher Energy Use During Heat Wave

Customers of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation are advised that electricity usage during this week, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday, will likely be higher due to hot and humid weather impacting much of the Northeast. The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which oversees the state's electric grid, indicates that electric supplies so far should be adequate to meet demand.

“As the heat wave is forecasted to continue today and Wednesday, the demand for electricity is likely to remain high as residents and businesses use air conditioning to stay cool. Keeping conservation in mind during these hottest days not only helps manage energy expenses, but also allows the statewide electric system to provide sufficient energy to meet peak demands,” said James P. Laurito, President of Central Hudson. Steps customers can take to save energy include:

  • Turning off lights, appliances, televisions, computers and other electric devices when not in use;
  • Setting thermostats on air conditioners to 78 degrees, and higher during times when the home is not occupied;
  • Using large appliances, such as dishwashers and dryers, during the evening hours, when overall energy use is less;
  • Closing doors, windows, curtains, shades and blinds during the day to seal out the heat and block sunlight when temperatures are at their highest; and
  • Keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed as long as possible, and limit the time they are opened.
