Central Hudson to Rebuild Section of Existing Transmission Line

Project to meet growing local energy needs

Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation will rebuild a 1.5-mile section of the CL line, an existing electric transmission line that serves communities from Catskill to Lawrenceville, including the areas of South Cairo, Freehold and Westerlo, and supports service in the Coxsackie and New Baltimore areas. The 1.5-mile section planned for reconstruction begins at Central Hudson’s North Catskill Substation on Route 9W, and ends near Cauterskill Road in Catskill. The reconstructed line will be built in its current location on the existing right-of-way, and will have a more streamlined appearance as the existing lattice towers will be replaced with steel poles.

Reconstruction of the line is slated to begin during the week of September 10, and the project is anticipated to finish by Spring 2008. During construction, there may be brief traffic interruptions along County Rt.23B and State Rt. 9W in the Town of Catskill.

“This important project will help improve the reliability of electric service, and allow this critical transmission line to meet the current and future energy needs of the communities it serves,” said Carl E. Meyer, President and Chief Operating Officer of Central Hudson. “It is also important that the rebuilt line is compatible with the communities in which it is located, and we are working closely with municipal officials in planning and building this project.”

The CL Line was originally built in the late 1940s. It has served the area for more than 60 years, however local energy usage has grown, and a part of the line is approaching its capacity limit and must be rebuilt.
